WALTON WOPPER FUN RUN !!
Date... Saturday Oct 26, 2024
Departure times... Porters Lake Pub parking Lot- 7:30 am // Forest Hills Highway #107 Extension - 8:00 am.
Meeting at the first departure point at Porters Lake Pub parking lot and departing at 7:30 am. Heading to Dartmouth via Highway # 107/ Main Street, We'll turn right on the Forest Hills, Highway #107 extension and park alongside the highway, adjacent to Maple Leaf Homes. No later than 8:00 am, we'll be leaving the roadside spot and heading up the Highway #118, to join up on Highway #102 and heading towards Elmsdale (exit 8). Off the off ramp we turn left on Elmsdale Rd, Highway #214 (past the superstore) till we meet highway #14 ("T"-intersection and turning left), travel approx 12 Km and take a slight right to Hwy 202, then continue straight onto NS-354 N (signs for NS-236/Kennetcook Noel/Noel). In Kennetcook, turn left to get to the parking at the Kennetcook Fire Hall. Google Maps Directions here: (https://maps.app.goo.gl/WEyXx3ZFpf6K1m3a6)
That's where we meet and depart from... the Firehall has lots of parking. We unload and get geared up ready to leave as a group. Departure time from the Firehall is 9:30 am... off we go! For those coming from the city and coming up Beaver Bank Road, you can meet us there at the Firehall and be ready to roll for 9:30 am.
Before we depart the Firehall, we'll all meet together and go over a few details of what the day may be. We also pass a Xmas stocking for donations to our "Marine Riders Trails Association Annual Xmas Toy Drive". For the "Walton Whopper Fun Run" ride to Walton, we don't charge any registration fee, but a donation to the Toy Drive Xmas Stocking is appreciated. This should be a nice "Late Fall Day Ride" and is a varied fun run on mixed trails, "k" class roads, logging trails, fields, dirt tracks, and of course a few puddles. For the brave, strong willed, The "I know I can do it riders", there is a wet muddy area that will test your skills to the max... this has only been achieved by a select few... Could this be you?
Once we get to Walton, we'll have lunch at the Walton Pub. They have a full menu, so if you think you can handle the famous Walton Whopper, then do it!. It's an awesome burger. If you decide not to have the Walton Whopper, then there are lots of other very tasty choices to take care of your appetite. So bring your wallet. After lunch, we'll start our trek back, doing a different loop and taking various different trails so there's more to see. This run averages 110 Km's. It is a full day run. And if your machine is hard on gas, don't forget to bring some, although there is a (self serve, self pay) set of pumps in Walton. Dress warm and to the weather, as the weather in that area is different from what is here. Sometimes better, and sometimes worse. Bring snacks and refreshments to have, while we do a few trail stops.
This is open to all Association members, friends and families. Anyone can come ride with us. Just remember that all OHV rules apply. This is a rain or shine event, so there is no rain date scheduled. See you all at our "Walton Whopper Fun Run!"
Blueberry Run Trail Re-instatement update
Finally! Getting work done to reinstate the Blueberry Run Trail.
This would not have been possible without the support of our trail partners:
· HALIFAX Regional Municipalities Active Transportation program,
· Nova Scotia's Department of Communities, Culture, Tourism & Heritage,
· the Nova Scotia Off-Highway Vehicle Infrastructure Fund and
· Trans-Canada Trails.
Work is now being done between Stella Drive and Porters Lake Stn Road and from Hwy 107 to Petain Station. Please respect the "Trail Closed" signs (they wont be there long) as work is expected to be complete in a few weeks. Once these sections are complete, depending on remaining funding, we'll begin work from Petain Station towards Seaforth!
Blueberry Run Public Notice
The Marine Riders Trail Association would like to advise all Blueberry Run trail users that construction to re-grade the existing railbed and improve trail drainage will begin September 23rd, 2024 and it anticipated to take 6-8 weeks. Work will be completed in sections, beginning at Stella/Marine Drive, and continuing south towards Seaforth. For public safety, as work progresses, the current section of trail being restored will be closed to all users, and will be flagged with signage and barricades at the nearest trail entrances. We thank the public and all trail users for their understanding and support of this initiative to restore the Blueberry Run trail.
Blueberry Run Vegetation Tender
The Marine Riders Trails Association is offering local contractors the opportunity to bid on a Tender to remove vegetation from the Blueberry Run Trail between Rutter Court in Seaforth and Highway 207 in Porters Lake. Blueberry Run News
The Marine Riders Trail Association has started a major reinstatement project to bring the facility at its expected standards as set by the Department of Natural Resources and Renewals (DNRR). The final facility width will be 3m-3.5m to safely accommodate a wide range of users: active transportation and OHV as per their current user permissions from the DNRR.
The vegetation clearing is the first step to restore the trail bed width the drainage system and sight lines. The next phase will be to restore the drainage system and trail bad grading then the surface, so it becomes accessible for all users.
This is a multi-year recapitalization project (not routine maintenance) but the results will safely connect the communities of Eastern Passage Cole Harbour Lawrencetown Porters Lake continuing into Gaetz Brook and Musquodoboit.
The Blueberry Run Reinstatement Project
Blueberry Run Reinstatement project has begun! The Marine Riders Trails Association has contracted WSP to develop a detailed design which we can then use to tender the reinstatement work. With financial help from HRM NS Communities Culture Tourism and Heritage Trans Canada Trail and the Off-Highway Vehicle Infrastructure Fund we hope to begin ‘shovels-in-the-ground’ work next spring. Stay tuned for more information.
